Jemeluk Bay
Amed's sheltered home bay — an easy shore dive over reef and black sand, a proper wall on the east point, and the centre of Bali's freediving scene.

Nusa Penida's signature bay — a beautiful coral garden on its own, and from July to October one of the world's most reliable places to meet the bizarre, bus-sized mola mola.

Diving in Bali, site by site
Bali's diving falls into a few distinct areas. Tulamben and Amed on the east coast are easy shore dives: the USAT Liberty wreck, Seraya Secrets and Jemeluk Bay. Nusa Penida, off the south-east coast, is boat diving with resident manta rays and seasonal mola mola. Padang Bai has sheltered critter diving, and Menjangan in the far north-west has coral walls and the calmest water on the island.
Where is the best diving in Bali?
It depends what you want to see. Tulamben has the USAT Liberty wreck and the muck diving at Seraya Secrets. Nusa Penida has manta rays all year and mola mola from July to October. Amed has calm reefs and the freediving scene. Menjangan, in West Bali National Park, has the clearest, calmest walls.
Which Bali dive sites are good for beginners?
Most of them. The Liberty wreck starts at 5 metres a short swim off the beach, Jemeluk Bay and Blue Lagoon are sheltered and easy, and Manta Point sits in about 10 metres. Crystal Bay is the exception: we rate it intermediate, so dive it with some experience or a guide who knows it.
Can you shore dive in Bali?
Yes. The east coast is shore diving country: the Liberty wreck, Seraya Secrets and Jemeluk Bay are all walk-in dives from the beach. Nusa Penida, Padang Bai and Menjangan are dived by boat.
When is the best time to dive in Bali?
April to November is the drier season and the best all-round window, but the east coast sites are diveable all year. Mantas are resident at Nusa Penida year-round; mola mola season is July to October, when the water there can drop to 18–24°C.
