Jemeluk is the bay that made Amed a diving village. It’s sheltered, it’s shallow at the edges, the reef starts a few fin-kicks from the beach, and on a normal morning the water is glassy. If Tulamben’s Liberty wreck is Bali’s blockbuster, Jemeluk is its local café — you come back every day and it keeps being good.

What’s down there

The bay floor is dark volcanic sand scattered with coral heads that get denser as you head east. An artificial-reef sculpture garden (including Amed’s famous underwater “post box”) sits in the shallows — a favourite with snorkelers and freedivers. The real prize for divers is the east point wall: it drops from about 8 metres to 25+, covered in sea fans and soft coral, with turtles cruising by, schooling fusiliers, and the occasional reef shark out in the blue.

The black sand is quietly excellent macro territory. Slow down on the way back from the wall and you’ll find ribbon eels, nudibranchs, shrimp gobies, and — if your guide is sharp — frogfish.

Freediving

Amed is the freediving capital of Bali, and Jemeluk is where most of it happens: multiple schools operate here, buoys sit over 20–40 m of calm, warm water, and there’s a real community of travelling freedivers most of the year. If you’ve ever wanted to try a discovery session or work toward a certification, this bay is one of the easiest, friendliest places in Asia to do it.

Practical

Getting there

Amed is 2.5–3 hours from the southern resorts, 20 minutes past Tulamben. Most people stay a few nights — the strip of villages (Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah) is full of dive centres, freedive schools, and cheap, good guesthouses.
